About Sagarika

SAGARIKA GHOSE  (born November 8th 1964) is Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha),  All India Trinamool Congress.  She is a noted journalist and author. 

She is the author of two biographies: `Indira, India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister’ (Juggernaut 2017) and `Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India’s Most Loved Prime Minister.’ (Juggernaut 2021) Both these biographies have been declared national best sellers. She is the author of the critically acclaimed polemical work, ‘Why I Am A Liberal: A Manifesto for Indians Who Believe in Individual Freedom.’  (Penguin 2018) 

Ghose is also the author of two novels, ‘The Gin Drinkers,’ (HarperCollins 1999) and ‘Blind Faith.'(HarperCollins 2005)

Ghose has worked as a journalist since 1991 at The Times Of India, Outlook magazine and The Indian Express. She was a prime time news anchor on BBC World’s `Question Time India’. She was a Prime Time news anchor at CNNIBN from 2005-2014, hosting the shows ‘Face The Nation,’ and ‘India 360.’ She was also deputy editor of CNN IBN.

Ghose was educated at Loreto Convent, Kolkata and Delhi, and Delhi Public School (R.K. Puram). She received her BA in First Class in History (Honours) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. (1983-1986 batch). A recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship she obtained an MA and M.Phil degree from Oxford University, UK, in History and International Relations.

Awards and Honours:

Ghose’s TV show Question Time Didi, an audience based interaction with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee received the NT Award for Best Public Debate Show in 2013. She was awarded the ITA award for Excellence in Journalism in 2009. In 2012 she received the CF Andrews Award for Distinguished Alumnus from St Stephen’s College. In 2013, Ghose received the ITA Best Anchor Award from the Indian Television Academy (ITA). 

In 2014, The Rhodes Project included Ghose on a list of 13 famous women Rhodes Scholars. In 2017 Ghose was awarded the C.H.Mohammed Koya National Award for journalism. 

In 2024 Ghose was elected as Member of Parliament ( Rajya Sabha) All India Trinamool Congress.

Personal

Ghose is married to journalist and anchor Rajdeep Sardesai. Rajdeep and Sagarika have two children, son Dr Ishan Sardesai, an ENT and facial aesthetic surgeon and daughter Tarini Sardesai, an M&A lawyer. Ghose is the daughter of Bhaskar Ghose (formerly of the Indian Administrative Service 1960 batch). Her two aunts include late Arundhati Ghose, former diplomat and Ruma Pal, former Supreme Court judge. She is the daughter in law of late Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai.
