Eighty-year-old Gandhi family loyalist Mallikarjun Kharge has been elected Congress president. As the ‘unofficial official’ candidate, blessed by the high command, his win comes as no surprise. ‘Outsider’ Shashi Tharoor put up a lively challenge, winning over 10% votes and revealing perhaps small stirrings of change. But it’s back to the high command and de facto rule by the Gandhis. This time the family will bear no responsibilities but wield invisible power behind the scenes.
