American media doesn’t fight shy of editorial opinion. During US elections media houses openly endorse their preferred candidate just as NYT has backed Hillary Clinton this time. It’s accepted that while the newspaper’s editorial position is in favour of Hillary (editorial pages after all always take a position), its news pages provide news without opinion. Being able to transparently endorse a candidate reflects the institutional strength of the American press.
They need not fear violent reprisals if their candidate does not win because American journalists are protected by the rule of law. Trump may abuse journalists and say they should be ‘silenced’ but there are many detailed checks and balances against politicians attempting to intimidate the media.
