The Delhi assembly polls this year put the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay to shame. The campaign script seemed to have been lifted from cinematic badlands in which dacoit-kings on horseback and gun slinging cops clash over exploding gunfire. Will “terrorist”, “goli maro” and “bullets not biryani” hit the election target? When the home minister said press the EVM with such anger that people feel a current, it was a shock to those who thought free bijli was the real poll current. In a menacing atmosphere it was as if political leaders were asking in the inimitable style of dacoit-sardar Gabbar Singh: “Arre oh Sambha, kitne aadmi the?” Amid threats and counter-threats, sometimes the capital’s election felt like capital punishment.
