A searing political debate was recently ignited when Rahul Gandhi’s ‘gotra’ was revealed. The Congress president stated that his ‘gotra’ (or the male bloodline that links Hindus with a range of ancient sages) was Dattatreya Kaul Brahmin. BJP protested with Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje arguing that Rahul Gandhi’s was an ill-gotten gotra. Rahul had stated his great grandfather Nehru’s ‘gotra’ and not his own. Union minister Smriti Irani revealed her own bona fide ‘gotra’. Another Union minister Giriraj Singh tweeted a film clip about somebody faking his gotra. Clearly Rahul Gandhi’s gotra had got the BJP’s goat. Quipped the internet wag, I gotcha your gotra.
