Two competitive groups have always vied for India’s post-colonial legacy: the Brown Sahibs and the Desis. With the dawn of Moditva, the Nehruvian era is well and truly buried. It isn’t just that Nehruvian citadel the Planning Commission which is being wound up, but so it seems is the English language because shuddh Hindi is the new English. In place of the Planning Commission, we now have a Niti Aayog. ‘Niti’ implies both ‘ethics’ and policy, and presumably much of the internal communication of the new Aayog will also be in the Rashtra Bhasha.
