Actor Kangana Ranaut may believe that India got its independence in 2014 and not in 1947, but long before 2021 there was 1991. That was the year in which Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao and finance minister Manmohan Singh pushed through such far-reaching economic reform that India changed forever.
Today, however, by sharp contrast, the Modi government has been forced to roll back the farm bills of 2020 in an uncharacteristic climbdown. A contrast can also be drawn with another BJP Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who determinedly achieved major disinvestment. The reform successes of Rao, Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh provide lessons for today.
