Bonafide citizens with all documentary proof of citizenship are being dubbed “Bangladeshi” “Rohingya” or “illegal” and threatened with deportation. Some are being pushed into neighbouring countries with no evidence. We spent two days at New Delhi’s Jai Hind Bengalee Colony for migrant labour and found that all – all—are citizens of India , they hail from Cooch Behar in north Bengal and their forefathers came as migrants to Delhi from north Bengal 30 years ago to build Vasant Kunj and other “posh” colonies. Today these migrant urban poor are at the receiving end of prejudice and total administrative neglect.
